CONGRATULATIONS!

Dear SSTAR members,

I am pleased to announce the winner of the 2024 SSTAR Health Professional Book Award is Trans Sex: Clinical Approaches to Trans Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments by Lucie Fielding, PhD, MA, LMHC, and published by Routledge. Congratulations, Dr. Fielding!

The SSTAR Health Professional Book Award is given to the best recent book for health professionals that contributes to the understanding and resolution of sexual disorders. Here is what Caroline Smith, Health Professional Book Award committee chair, said on behalf of the committee about Trans Sex: Clinical Approaches to Trans Sexualities and Erotic Embodiments:

“The committee found the book to be conceptually vigorous, richly practical, well-written and accessible. Fielding’s framework, grounded in solid clinical practice, weaves together social justice, trans feminism, and radical queer theory in the service of providing pleasure-centered therapy to trans and non-binary clients. She challenges us to locate ourselves in our work, wrestle with our biases and engage our clients’ (as well as our own) embodied creativity. We appreciated Fielding’s inclusion of other trans and non-binary professional voices as well as exercises for clients to do in and outside of session. The committee feels this book brings nuanced attention to the specific needs, concerns and liberative possibilities for our trans and non-binary clients/patients and it orients providers who do not work with this population towards a compassionate relationship with the embodied sexual self.”

Lucie Fielding, PhD, MA, LMHC, is a queer, non-binary trans femme (pronouns: she/they; elle/iel) and a therapist and sexuality educator.

The 2024 Book Award Committee also chose a book for exceptional merit - Transforming Sexual Narratives: A Relational Approach to Sex Therapy by long-time SSTAR member Suzanne Iasenza, PhD – and had this to say:

“The committee experienced this book as a delicious homecoming to the fundamentals of psychoanalytic therapy, couple and family systems and sex therapy. Utilizing her original approach called Narrative Relational Sex Therapy, Iasenza gifts her readers, sex therapists and generalists alike, with a practical roadmap into the wilds of human sexuality. The aim for most of us is to help our clients re-story their sexual challenges, shame and regret into heathy and pleasurable sex lives. This beautifully written book shows us how to do this with a wide range of populations and clinical concerns. A member of our committee said, ‘Transforming Sexual Narratives reminds me of why I became a therapist in the first place and Trans Sex reminds me of what continues to excite me about being a sex therapist today.’ Both of these books are exceptional reads for providers at all stages of their careers.”

Congratulations to Dr. Fielding and we look forward to their remarks at the 2024 SSTAR Annual Meeting in Toronto. And congratulations to Dr. Iasenza for the recognition of her work.

In addition, my sincere thanks to the Health Professional Book Award Committee chaired by Caroline Smith, with Ruth Koelling, Mary Beth Golden, Bernard Newton Caroline Maykut and Derek Polonsky.

Sincerely,

Morag Yule, PhD
SSTAR President
