“Circumcision on the Couch: Psychoanalytic Reflections on the Phallic Cut”
Jordan Osserman, PhD
Friday, January 6, 2023
6:30PM – 8:30PM (EST)
PPSC
Live Webinar on Zoom!
$60 Regular Admission and $40 Student
*This talk provides 2 hours of continuing education credits for LCSWs, LMSWs, LPs, LMHCs, LCATs, and licensed psychologists.
In recent years opposition to the practice of male circumcision, sometimes called ‘intactivism’, has grown from a fringe phenomenon to a mainstream part of American life. Why are some men so up in arms about the foreskin, and what can psychoanalysis say about it? In this talk, based on his recently published book, Dr. Osserman will explore classical psychoanalytic scholarship on the meaning and significance of male circumcision. In order to better understand how the phallic cut has become a symptom around which pressing questions of identity, sexuality, and masculinity are entangled, contemporary controversies around the practice will be discussed.
JORDAN OSSERMAN, PHD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex, UK, and a psychoanalyst in formation. His research interests include the medical humanities, the Lacanian tradition of psychoanalysis, left wing politics, and gender/sexuality studies. His book, Circumcision on the Couch: The Cultural, Psychological, and Gendered Dimensions of the World's Oldest Surgery was published with Bloomsbury Academic this year.
Learning Objectives
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
demonstrate familiarity with lesser-known psychoanalytic scholarship on the significance of male circumcision as a ritual practice and its relationship to the acquisition of gender identity.
critically analyze contemporary sentiment for and against male circumcision.
apply the meaning and significance of male circumcision to their clinical work, particularly with patients who struggle with masculinity and/or feelings of sexual inadequacy.
Agenda
6:30 – 7:00: Contemporary controversies in circumcision, classical psychoanalytic literature on circumcision, sexual difference, and “the cut.”
7:00 – 7:30: Arguments for and against circumcision today and their fantasmatic/ symptomatic significance.
7:30 – 8:00: Concluding reflections on the relationship between classical psychoanalytic theory and contemporary political controversies around circumcision and provocations for clinical work.
8:00 – 8:30: Q & A.
