Understanding the Meaning of Sexual Fantasies in Psychotherapy
Michael Bader, DMH
Friday, February 19, 2021
6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (EST)
Live Webinar on Zoom!
Covid Discount: $50 Regular Admission and $30 Student
Using a psychoanalytically-oriented theoretical model developed by Joseph Weiss, M.D. and the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group, I explore the various ways that sexual fantasies are creatively constructed by minds which are singularly committed to safety. Sexual excitement is inhibited by certain pathogenic beliefs connected to feelings of guilt, shame, and helplessness. Sexual fantasies enable us to disconfirm these beliefs and, as a result, safely allow sexual arousal to emerge. Therapists can use the details of a patient’s sexual fantasies to infer a great deal about that person’s core pathogenic beliefs. In this sense, fantasies are a window into the workings of the mind.
Agenda
6:30 pm– 7:00 pm: The centrality of safety and disconfirming pathogenic beliefs in the experience of sexuality
7:00 pm – 7:30 pm: Sadomasochism and other sexual fantasies as a solution to guilt
7:30 pm – 7:45 pm: Sexual fantasies as a solution to problems of shame, rejection, and helplessness
7:45 – 8:15: Fashion, Gender, and the social construction of sexuality—objectives
8:15 pm-8:30 pm: Q & A
