Sexual Trauma Play: Repetition Compulsion, Erotic Excitement, and Traumatophilia
Avgi Saketopoulou, PhD
Friday, March 18, 2022
6:30PM – 8:30PM (EDT)
$50 Regular Admission and $30 Student
How do we understand sexual encounters that vibrate on the frequency of previous traumatic experience? Why do some couples "play" at that difficult edge? This presentation draws on psychoanalytic theory and clinical experience to discuss the difficult entanglements between sexuality and trauma, how such pairings can show up in couples, and to address the countertransferential anxieties that arise in the therapist working with such material.
Learning Objectives
After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
- describe the difference between traumatic repetitions that are compulsive versus traumatophilic.
- explain what couples that step into the fray of trauma together may gain from such experiences.
- critique the notion of affirmative consent, and explain why limit consent may be a more apposite model for thinking sexuality with trauma.
Agenda
6:30 – 7:00: Distinguishing traumatic repetitions that are compulsive from those that are traumatophilic.
7:00 – 7:30: How engaging in the fray of trauma together can benefit couples.
7:30 – 8:00: Problems with the notion of affirmative consent and why limit consent might be a more apposite model for thinking about sexuality with trauma.
8:00 – 8:30: Q & A.

**Books for Sale by Gail Guttman**
Hi all,
I have some copies of the Integrative Sex and Couples Therapy, edited by Tammy Nelson. I wrote two chapters, “Sex and Couples Therapy: Biopsychosocial and Relationship Therapy" and "Internal Family Systems and Sex Therapy” in this book. In fact, Deborah Fox, a couples and sex therapist in the DC area, wrote a chapter, "The Mind-Body Connection: Couples, Sex, and Somatic Therapy." The other chapters are written by other sex therapists and educators and are excellent.
.
I also have copies of Critical Connections, The Step to Step Guide to Transform Your Business Through Referral Marketing. Evan Leepson, my husband, wrote this book. It is excellent for those of you that are trying to build a better or enhance practice.
.
We are selling these for $20 a book for a discount, including shipping. Please write to me and let me know if you are interested in either book. You can pay through Venmo or by send a check to the address below
.
This a great opportunity for some good reading, strategies and tips in other subjects.
