OCTOBER Announcements

**SSTAR Clinical Case Conference (Oct 29) Fully Virtual**

After much consideration and out of an abundance of caution due to the ongoing COVID uncertainty and hotel restrictions, SSTAR is cancelling the in-person clinical case conference and offering it virtually via Zoom webinar. Those already registered to attend in person have been notified and will be refunded the difference in registration. While we are all disappointed that we won’t be meeting in person, we do think SSTAR is making the best decision for the sake of our speakers and attendees, as well as the organization.

Registration for the virtual conference is still open.

Sexuality and Illness: A Guidebook for Health Professionals

By Anne Katz

This evidence-based guide educates and informs health professionals about promoting sexual wellbeing in the context of challenges from physical and mental health.

Sexuality is an important aspect of quality of life for many people but can be affected by a wide variety of health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, mental illness, menopause, diseases of ageing, neurological diseases and spinal cord injuries, combat injuries, and cancer. Building readers’ confidence in initiating and encouraging open communication on this often-neglected topic, Sexuality and Illness includes case studies that illustrate how to talk about sexuality and support patients with concerns about it. Making recommendations for practice and further reading, it takes into account gender, sexual, race and ethnic diversity.

This accessible text demystifies a topic that is sometimes difficult to discuss. It is essential reading for healthcare practitioners interested in providing comprehensive and person-centred care.

Couple Sexuality After 60: Intimate, Pleasurable, and Satisfying

by Barry McCarthy and Emily McCarthy

Confronting taboos and misunderstandings about sexuality and aging, Couple Sexuality After 60: Intimate, Pleasurable, and Satisfying motivates couples to embrace sex and sexuality after their 60s, using the Good Enough Sex (GES) model. This book places the essence of sexuality in pleasure-oriented touching, not individual sex performance. Barry and Emily McCarthy introduce a new sexual mantra of ‘desire/pleasure/eroticism/satisfaction’ with the goal of presenting a healthy model of sexuality to replace the traditional double standard that couples learn in young adulthood.
